چکیده
Where did you perform your internship/residency and what field of specialization did you choose? I completed my internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. This was one of the formative experiences of my medical career, and was where I truly learned to become a physician. I was fortunate to have been trained by wonderfully gifted and talented faculty, clinicians, and educators. After completing internal medicine residency, I chose to pursue subspecialty training in infectious diseases, largely because of the clinical mentorship of the infectious diseases specialists at the University of Pennsylvania. They were such master clinicians and role models, I could not help but wish to aspire to that level of clinical acumen. In addition, the field of infectious diseases is endlessly fascinating, from both a clinical and scientific standpoint.

ECOR phylotyping and determination of virulence genes in Escherichia coli isolates from pathological conditions of broiler chickens in poultry slaughter-houses of southeast of Iran
Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) are responsible for wide ranges of extra-intestinal diseases in poultry including colibacillosis, cellulitis, coligranuloma and yolk sac infection. Numbers of virulence are considered important in the pathogenicity of these diseases. The aims of the present study were phylogenetic typing and virulence genes detection in Escherichia coli </em...
متن کاملIsolation and Detection of Virulence factors of Salmonella typhimurium and Salmonella enteritidis
Plasmids play an important role in the virulence and antibiotic resistance of Salmonella. Salmonella carry plasmids having different size and number. Plasmid profile analysis of single isolates of Salmonella typhimurium and Salmonella enteritidis revealed the presence of 4- plasmid profiles. Salmonella serovars produce several Type III secretions including Sop-E and Sop –B. Soap E is detected b...
متن کاملComparative virulence studies and transcriptome analysis of Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from animals
Several studies have been conducted to check the prevalence of methicillin-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in animals and animal-derived food products but limited data are available regarding their virulence and associated gene expression profile. In the present study, antibiotic resistance and virulence of MRSA and methicillin-sensitive S. aureus animal isolates were determin...
متن کاملEvaluation of Virulence Factors and Plasmid-Related Transmissibility among Different Isolates of Enterococci
The incidence of virulence factors among 114 Enterococcus faecalis and 35 Enterococcus faecium strains from different clinical specimens were compared with those isolated from control groups. A few of the isolates expressed two or more of the following traits simultaneously: hemolysin, aggregation substance, gelatinase, DNase, hemagglutinin and antibiotic resistance. The frequencies of hemolysi...

How can one successfully combine working in the clinic with heading a research lab? I am a veterinarian but had lost interest in being a clinical practitioner. Instead, I started to work as a field epidemiologist to clarify the causative agents and routes of foodborne infectious diseases in Osaka City, Japan from 1985 to 1999. Consequently, my research targets always appeared through the invest...
متن کاملVirulence gene profiles of avian pathogenic Escherichia coli isolated from chickens with colibacillosis in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.
Colibacillosis, a disease caused by avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC), is one of the main causes of economic losses in the poultry industry worldwide. This study was carried out in order to determine the APEC-associated virulence genes contained by E. coli isolates causing colibacillosis in chickens. A total of 45 E. coli isolates were obtained from the diagnostics and research branch of...
